All About Me

My Teaching Philosophy: I strive to create a calm, inspiring, safe environment for all my learners. I believe that there should be a level of trust between a teacher and student. The best way to accomplish this is for me to make mistakes in the classroom and own up to it. I teach my students that making mistakes is part of the learning process. I also feel that there is always room for humor. We will laugh a lot during our time in the classroom this year. My desire is for all my students to look forward to coming to school with an attitude of excitement.
My 2013-2014 Goal: My goal for this year is to listen to my students more. Often times throughout the day we are rushed from place to place and subject to subject. I will be implementing a personal journal time starting on the first day of school. From prior experience, I know that this is a great tool to get insight into a child's thoughts and feelings. I also hope to spend at least one lunch period a week and sit and eat with the class (this is a great opportunity for me to remind them of our cafeteria rules as well). Thankfully, Franklin Academy has a strict recess policy. Everyday the students will get 30 minutes of free play outside. My goal is to play along side them.
My Education: I hold a degree in Psychology with a minor in Education from the University of Maryland. While in college I completed my student teaching in a first grade class. I was once a certified EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) and hold a current CPR certificate. While in college I served as the president of the Chess Club as well as the president of the Political Science Club.
My Experience: While going to school I worked as an English teacher in a Japanese Primary School. Once I graduated, I was hired to work alongside many talented and experienced teachers at the Department of Defense Dependent Schools in Okinawa, Japan. Throughout all my years teaching I have taught Kindergarten, Pre-Kindergarten, Fourth Grade, and served as a Reading Intervention teacher.
My Personal life: I was born in California but grew up in Washington State. After high school I moved to Philadelphia Pennsylvania. I have lived in Florida for the past 11 years. Over the past summer I left my teaching position in Miami to work here at Franklin Academy. As I realized that my personal educational philosophy seem to parallel those of Franklin Academy, I simply couldn't turn this opportunity down. I am the proud mom of fourth grade twins. Anna and Ben both attend Franklin Academy however, they are not in my class. They are truly the light of my life. I have recently divorced and just bought a home in Davie. I am learning to do different types of DIY projects. First up is painting the front door red. Wish me luck! I have a dog named Bobdog and a cat named Friday. Somehow Bobdog keeps escaping from the backyard and has met more of the neighbors than I have. One more DIY project to work on, I suppose. I love to read books in particular historical non-fiction and mystery novels. I also enjoy riding my pink bike, and going to the beach.
